Buying khula kapra by the meter means you only pay for what you need – as long as you know how much that is. Order too little and your tailor can't finish the suit; order too much and you've paid for fabric that sits in a cupboard. Here's a practical guide for the most common Pakistani outfits.
Quick reference
| Outfit | Approximate length |
|---|---|
| Men's shalwar kameez | 4.5 meters |
| Men's kurta only | 2.5 meters |
| Men's shalwar only | 2.5 meters |
| Women's shirt / kameez | 2.5 – 3 meters |
| Women's shalwar or trouser | 2 – 2.5 meters |
| Dupatta | 2.5 meters |
| Women's 3-piece suit | 7 – 8 meters in total |
These numbers assume an average adult height and a standard 44–58 inch fabric width. Use them as a starting point and always check with your tailor for your exact design.
What changes how much you need
1. Fabric width
Width matters as much as length. A 58-inch wash & wear or khaddar lets the tailor cut more pieces side by side, so a men's suit fits comfortably in 4.5 m. With narrower fabric (36–44 inches) the same suit can need an extra half meter. Every product on Kapray Walay lists its width in the fabric details – read our fabric width guide for more.
2. Height and fit
If you are taller than about 5'10", or you like a long kameez or a wide shalwar, add 0.5 m. Children's suits usually need roughly half an adult length.
3. Design and style
Flared frocks, anarkalis, angrakhas and pleated trousers use noticeably more fabric than a straight-cut shirt. Bold prints and checks may also need extra so your tailor can match the pattern across seams.
4. Shrinkage
Natural fibres such as cotton, lawn and khaddar can shrink slightly on the first wash. Pre-washing before stitching avoids surprises – keep that in mind if your tailor asks for a little extra.
